If you make a quick search for pictures of these ladies, you will immediately notice the great shape that they are in.

By "great shape", it means they all have bodies with ripping muscles. These bodybuilding images are mostly their appearances during competitions, which means that they have their body fat percentage adjusted to the lowest.

Do they look like that all the time?

Of course not! Like everything else in the world, they go into off-season mode as well. When they are not competing, they allow their body fat percentage to increase. However, even during the off season, their body fat percentage is still way below average females.

The reason why these female bodybuilders are able to maintain their low fat percentages is because of their high metabolism rate. Due to their intense workouts, they have developed a lot of lean muscle mass.

Having more lean muscles in the body means that it will burn off more fat naturally. Therefore, even when there is an increase in calorie intake, the body is still able to maintain a low fat percentage.

Note that the fat percentage for a female is different from that of a male. For males, they are able to lower their body fat percentage to as low as 4%. For females, you have to add 5% to that number.

If you see a picture of a female bodybuilder with bulky muscles, that's probably a contestant in a female bodybuilding contest.

In recent years, there has been a rise in popularity in fitness and figure building competitions.

For females, such contests are divided into 2 categories - fitness and figure building. Both categories are often held in the same bodybuilding event.

Fitness competition involves a physical performance by the contestant. The performance is usually some dance or aerobic moves. The focus is on lean muscles with separation between muscle groups.

Figure building competitions are less demanding. But they are getting more and more popular because many females enjoy building up a shapely and well toned figure. In such competitions, appearance matters more than fitness.

There are two rounds in this competition. The first round requires the contestant to display her figure in a one piece swim suit. The second round requires the contestant to walk on stage with other contestants in a two piece swim suit for comparison purposes.
